Grammarly is a type of generative artificial intelligence or AI that helps professionals and academia to craft their work without any grammatical mistakes. It emerges as a tool to improve writing. However, it later evolves into a comprehensive package that includes paraphrasing, a plagiarism checker, and an AI writing assistant. Grammarly appears as a promising AI companion that can boost your productivity and refine your writing. There are some perils that make it annoying.

Generative AI, like Grammarly, is revamping the work. It allows every writer to produce a work that only people with a rich command of language can produce. Grammarly provides services that are once available to editorials, media companies, or publishers who have writers, proofreaders, and editors to improve or refine the writing process. The paid version of Grammarly is a powerful generative AI that can suggest topics, provide support in writing, and proofread the final work. Before 2025, Grammarly offer human-based wiring services; it completely turned to AI.

Besides providing AI-based writing services, Grammarly is also emotionally intelligent. It allows the writers to reflect their tone in their writing. For example, if you’re exhausted and received an email from your boss that our recent project’s deadline has been revised and it needs to be ready within 5 days, which turn your exhaustion into burnout. In this case, you may write a frustrated email that can put your job. Grammarly allows you to change your tone to formal or friendly, so whoever receives your email will not feel bad. This feature is particularly useful for people who are straightforward and lack the art of communication that some good communicators have.

These features make Grammarly an intuitive choice to include in your browser extension or integrate into your word processing software. However, it has some drawbacks. Grammarly works by making your writing clear. It sometimes restructures your sentences and even shortens them to make ideas clearer and easier to understand. This makes the writing appear more AI and less human. That means Grammarly undermines your actual voice, and sometimes it may appear that you didn’t really write it.

Another problem with Grammarly is its intrusive behavior. Grammarly can be integrated into a browser and word processing software. When it is turned on, it will continuously give you suggestions to correct punctuations, spelling, or sentence structures. Many people consider it quite intrusive and turn it off because some suggestions can be overwhelming. Grammarly’s productivity benefits are obvious, but the way it works is also concerning for some academics and professionals. Only those people can benefit from Grammarly who know when to use it and when to turn it off, so it cannot overwhelm the writers, and its intrusive behavior will not affect them.
