The 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis was a circus of naive moves by the United States and the Soviet Union. Both countries acted very unwisely. For example, in 1961, the US tried to invade Cuba to remove Castro. Equally, the following year, Khrushchev, in response, placed nuclear-armed missiles in Cuba. This likely led to preemptive nuclear war. However, the US and the Soviet Union reached an agreement in which the Soviet Union would take its missiles from Cuba, while the US would withdraw its missiles from Turkey. The US also agreed that it would never invade Cuba.
A Soviet submarine in the Caribbean part of seven submarines was sent in response of the crisis. This submarine needed to be withdrawn, so when it was going back, some stupid soldiers of the US Navy and Air Force threw hand grenades as a celebration. The explosions reflected to the submarine that it was under attack, and a war was started. This is the only submarine in the squad equipped with nuclear torpedoes. The captain of the submarine ordered to launch the nuclear torpedo. However, one person senior to the captain in the submarine believed on his instincts that a war is not started. This senior officer withdrew the torpedoes and saved the world.
What if the torpedo was fired? The US nuclear program is designed in a way that any nuclear attack on the US would result in activating and launching all of the US nuclear weapons around the world. The US has thousands of nuclear weapons, which could lead to the end of the world. The person saved the nuclear war was Vasily Aleksandrovich Arkhipov.
After 30 years of this incident, people realized that Arkhipov saved the world and was given honors in the 1990s. No person ever thinks of nuclear war, but this attack could have started it.
Now, Ukraine is using long-range missiles of the US and Britain to attack inside Russia. Europe, the UK, the US, and Israel consider it smart, but they do not know how stupid it can be.
